Monday night or as it is in our great state "family night" was spent at the Utah State Fair. We met Lez's parents, her sister and brother-in-law, and niece there. Everything got kicked off with Lez arguing with her mom that the fair grounds are no where near 10th north in Salt Lake and that she needs to learn how to give directions. It truly was hilarious. After we got in and rounded everyone up it was off to the food court for your choice of gut bomb. I ended up with a $6 sandwich that wound up in the garbage after two bites. Then my dinner was spread out for the rest of the evening and included a variety of foot long corn dogs, those super sweet candied almonds, and oh yes, one of the greatest things I have ever tasted in my entire life.
The DEEP FRIED TWINKY.
If you have never had one of these you are truly shafting yourself out of one of life's greatest delicacies. My two partners in the above picture wanted to try to hang with a true garbage gut but went with the deep fried Snickers bar. Pansies I say. Go big or go home. It was amazing. The deep fryer changes the molecular make up of the whipped cream in the Twinky into something this side of heaven that only Mr. Wonka could have dreamed up and the outer cakey goodness bonds with the fried lard to make the sweetest tasting thing since Daylight Doughnuts. I am giving myself the shakes just thinking about it.
Enough about the Twinky greatness. We took Rayce through all the barns and he got to see it all. He loved the rabbits and tried to eat their food. After we made it through the barns he stood in wonder watching the kiddie rides and asked me a million times to go on the ferris wheel. That would have been a good idea. Seven minutes of him screaming and me trying to not lose my son from 86 feet up in the air to an "I want to get out dad" jump over the side.
It was however more fun than I expected the fair to be. I remember the last time I went and it was nothing but carnies, crappy food (still there, not including the twinky), ridiculously expensive games, rides that could come apart at any moment and cause a huge catastrophe, and a huge indoor info-mercial. Come to think of it, not much has changed.
